Procedure

Thirty-one percent aqueous hydrogen peroxide (1.0 ml) was added to a solution of N-t-butyl-5-chloro-2-pyridinecarboxamide obtained in Example 40 (0.35 g, 1.65 mmol) in trifluoroacetic acid (5 ml), and heated under reflux for 1.5 hours. The reaction mixture was added portionwise into an ice-cooled 1N aqueous NaOH and extracted three times with ethyl acetate and the extracts were dried over MgSO4. The solvent was evaporated, and the residue was purified by silica gel chromatography (hexane/ethyl acetate=5/1 to 2/1) to give the title compound (0.24 g, 65%).
