Crude 2,3-di(9-(Z)-octadecenyl)propanal of formula (10) from Preparation 7 (10.0 g, 16.9 mmol) was dissolved in tetrahydrofuran/methanol (1:1, 200 ml) and cooled to 0° C. Sodium borohydride (3.13 g, 85.0 mmol) was added and the mixture was stirred overnight. The solution was acidified with 1N HCl to pH<2, diluted with ether, washed with water, concentrated and column chromatographed (chloroform) to give the title compound as an oil.
