Procedure

A solution of 0.82 g (3.9 mmol) of 4-hydroxymethyl-3-methylsulfanyl-1,3-dihydro-indol-2-one in DMF (20 mL) was treated with 0.65 g (4.3 mmol) of t-butyidimethylsilyl chloride and 0.3 g (4.4 mmol) of imidazole and stirred for 24 h. The solution was diluted with 75 mL of hexane and 75 mL of EtOAc. The organic phase was washed with brine, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to give 1.2 g (95%) of 3-methylsulfanyl4-(t-butyldimethylsilyloxy)methyl-1,3-dihydro-indol-2-one as a clear oil which crystallised upon storage at rt: 1H NMR (DMSO-d6): δ 0.051 (s, 3H), 0.064 (s, 3H), 0.881 (s, 9H), 1.87 (s, 3H), 4.43 (s, 1H), 4.79 (d, J=14.2 Hz, 1H), 4.88 (d, J=14.2 Hz, 1H), 6.70 (d, J=7.9 Hz, 1H), 7.00 (d, J=7.9 Hz, 1H), 7.19 (t, J=7.9 Hz, 1H), 10.48 (s, 1H); APCI−MS m/z 346 (M+23)+.
