Procedure

Sodium hydride (60% dispersion in mineral oil, 0.190 g, 4.75 mmol) was added to a solution of N-(2-methylsulphonylethyl)trifluoroacetamide (0.986 g, 4.50 mmol) in dry DMF (10 ml) and the mixture was stirred under a nitrogen atmosphere for 30 minutes. Ethyl bromoacetate (0.55 ml, 0.828 g, 4.96 mmol) was added and the mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The mixture was poured into ice-water, and extracted with ethyl acetate. This solution was washed with water, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound as a white solid (1.239 g, 4.03 mmol, 90%); δH CDCl3 4.17 (4H,m), 3.91 (2H,t), 3.46 (2H,t), 2.98 (3H,s), 1.30 (3H,t).
