Procedure
A mixture of 0.80 g of ethyl 4,5-dihydro-6-(4-nitrobenzoyl)-6H-thieno[3,2-d][1]-benzazepine-2-carboxylate in 25 ml of ethanol, 6 ml of tetrahydrofuran and 3.13 ml of 1M sodium hydroxide is stirred at room temperature for 22 hours. The mixture is acidified with 2 ml of 2M HCl and the solvents removed. The residue is dried under vacuum and extracted several times with CHCl3 --CH3 OH (1:1). The extracts are combined and the solvent removed to give 0.72 g of 4,5-dihydro-6-(4-nitro-benzoyl)-6H-thieno[3,2-d][1]benzazepine-2-carboxylic acid as a yellow solid; mass spectrum (CI) 395 (MH+).
