Slowly add 4-chlorophenylmagnesium chloride (5.9 mL of 1M solution) to a solution of ethyl 4-oxo-cyclohexanecarboxylate (1.0 g) in Et2O at 0° C. After 1 h, pour the reaction mixture into 1N HCl and extract with Et2O. Separate the organic layer, wash with water, brine and concentrate to give ethyl 4-(4-chlorophenyl)-4-hydroxy-cyclohexanecarboxylate (1.75 g) which is used without purification in the next step.
