In a 10 ml flask, hydroxy-acetic acid methyl ester (0.4 ml, 0.53 mmol) was dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (1.5 ml), and then sodium hydride (23 mg, 0.57 mmol) was added thereto. After 40 minutes, 2-chloro-3-nitro-5-trifluoromethyl-pyridine (100 mg, 0.44 mmol) was added and then stirred for 2 hours at room temperature. After completion of the reaction, water was added thereto and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate (Na2SO4), filtered and evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica eluting with a solvent of n-hexane:ethyl acetate=9:1. The fractions containing the product were collected and evaporated to obtain white solid (84 mg, 68%).
