Procedure
A 50 ml, round bottom flask was charged with 3-(pyridin-2-yl)-5-nitro-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine (0.10 g, 0.41 mmol) and tin dichloride (1.0 g, 5.2 mmol) in ethyl acetate (10 mL) and methanol (10 mL) and was heated to reflux for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled and poured into saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate and filtered through celite. The organic layer was separated, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated. The residue was purified by silica gel chromatography eluting with 10-60% methanol in methylene chloride to afford 3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridin-5-amine (52 mg, 59% yield) as a solid.
