A mixture of {5-fluoro-3-[3-(4-fluorobenzenesulfonyl)thiophen-2-ylmethyl]-2-methylindol-1-yl}acetic acid methyl ester (0.17 g), tetrahydrofuran (2.0 mL) and methanol (1.0 mL) was treated with 5.0 M aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (1.5 mL), and the resulting mixture was stirred at 40° C. overnight. The mixture was acidified by the addition of 5.0 M aqueous hydrochloric acid solution and concentrated to low bulk under reduced pressure. The resulting precipitate was collected by filtration, washed with water and dried to afford the title compound as a cream solid (0.11 g).
