Procedure

A mixture of {5-chloro-3-[2-(benzenesulfonyl)pyridin-2-ylmethyl]-3-methylindol-1-yl}acetic acid methyl ester (0.15 g) and tetrahydrofuran (1.3 mL) was treated with 5.0 M aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (1.7 mL), and the resulting mixture was stirred at 40° C. for 2 hours. The mixture was acidified by the addition of 5.0 M aqueous hydrochloric acid solution and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic extract was dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by preparative reverse-phase HPLC, eluting with a mixture of acetonitrile and water (2:3 to 9:1 by volume) to afford the title compound as a white solid (0.23 g).
