Procedure

A mixture of 2-(tert-butyl-dimethylsilanyloxymethyl)benzenethiol (5.6 g), 5-bromopyridine (4.6 g), cesium carbonate (11 g) and N-methylpyrrolidone (25 mL) was heated at 100° C. for 2 hours. The mixture was diluted with water and extracted with diethyl ether. The combined organic extract was washed with water and saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution and dried over magnesium sulfate. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel, eluting with a mixture of cyclohexane and ethyl acetate (1:0 to 0:1 by volume) to afford the title compound as a light brown oil (7.0 g).
