A mixture of [3-(2-benzenesulfonylbenzyl)-5-fluoro-2-methylindol-1-yl]acetic acid methyl ester (0.17 g), tetrahydrofuran (3.0 mL) and methanol (1.5 mL) was treated with 1.0 M aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (1.5 mL), and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The mixture was acidified by the addition of 1.0 M aqueous hydrochloric acid solution (1.5 mL) and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate, dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the title compound as a cream solid (0.13 g).
