Procedure

Methyl indole-5-carboxylate (0.875 g, 5.0 mmol) was added to a suspension of sodium hydride (60% in oil, 0.22 g, 5.5 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (15 mL) at 0° C. The resultant solution was stirred at room temperature for 30 min. Bromopentane (0.706 mL, 5.69 mmol) was added to the solution, and stirring was continued for 4 hours. The solution was poured into ice water (100 mL), and the product was extracted into dichloromethane. The organic solution was washed several times with water and dried over sodium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo, and the residue was purified by flash silica gel chromatography using 5% ethyl acetate in hexane as the eluant, to give the product, 0.975 g (79%), as an oil. MS: m/z 280 (MH+). 1H NMR (CDCl3): 0.87 (t, 3 H), 1.22-1.40 (m, 4 H), 1.77-1.87 (m, 2 H), 3.92 (s, 3 H), 4.11 (t, 2 H), 6.58 (d, 1 H), 7.14 (d, 1 H), 7.32 (d, 1 H), 7.90 (d of d, 1 H) and 8.40 (d, 1 H).
