1-(4-Amino-3-methylphenyl)ethanone (1.70 g, 11.39 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (15 mL)-acetone (38 mL). The solution was cooled to 0° C. 48% Hydrobromic acid (5.15 mL, 45.56 mmol) was dropwise added to the solution for 1 minute. A solution of sodium nitrite (943 mg, 13.67 mmol) in water (1.8 mL) was further added to the solution. The mixture was stirred at the same temperature for 30 minutes. The mixture was left to room temperature. Methyl acrylate (7.23 mL, 80.30 mmol) and copper(I) oxide (117 mg) were added to the mixture. The resulting mixture was stirred at 40° C. for 30 minutes. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure. Ice-cold water (150 mL) was added to the residue. The mixture was neutralized with ammonia water, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with saturated brine, and dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure to give the desired compound (2.79 g) as brown oil (yield 82%).
