Reagents, catalysts & solvents 1
Procedure
A mixture of 4-[4-(2-methoxyphenyl)piperazin-1-ylmethyl]-4-methyl-2-(3-pyridyl)-2-imidazolin-5-one (3.7 g; prepared in a similar manner to that described in Example 36), allyl bromide (1.05 ml), finely-powdered potassium hydroxide (0.79 g), 18-Crown-6 (0.26 g) and tetrahydrofuran (50 ml) was stirred at ambient temperature under nitrogen for 120 hours, then poured onto ice-water (30 ml). The product was extracted into ethyl acetate, the extracts were dried (MgSO4), and the solvent was removed in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash chromatography over silica using a 9:1 mixture of ethyl acetate and ethanol as eluant. Appropriate fractions were combined, and the solvents removed in vacuo to leave 1-allyl-4-[4-(2-methoxyphenyl)piperazin-1-ylmethyl]-4-methyl-2-(3-pyridyl)-2-imidazolin-5-one as an off-white solid (0.25 g), m.p. 66-69° C.
