Procedure

To a mixture of ethyl 2-[(4-hydroxy-2-nitrophenyl)hydrazono]propanoate (6.81 g), potassium carbonate (3.52 g) and N,N-dimethylformamide (100 mL) was added 1-bromo-3-methoxypropane (3.90 g) at 60° C., and the mixture was stirred at 60° C. for 15 hr. Water was added to the reaction mixture, and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with saturated brine, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated. The obtained residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography, and eluted with hexane-ethyl acetate (4:1-1:1, volume ratio) to give the title compound (3.67 g, yield 42%) as orange crystals.
