A suspended mixture of 1-(diphenylmethyl)-3-(4-fluoro-2-hydroxy-5-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-one (1.10 g, 2.5 mmol), chloroiodomethane (0.70 g, 4.0 mmol) and cesium carbonate (2.60 g, 8.0 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (50 mL) was stirred at ambient temperature for 24 h. The reaction mixture was filtered. The solid was washed with acetone (50 mL). The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to dryness. The residue was purified by column chromatography with a 20% to 70% gradient of ethyl acetate in hexanes to afford 1′-(diphenylmethyl)-6-fluoro-5-methoxyspiro[1-benzofuran-3,3′-indol]-2′(1′H)-one (0.49 g, 43%) as a colorless solid: MS (ES+) m/z 452.0 (M+1).
