A catalyst is prepared as described in Example 1 except that the addition of potassium nitrate is omitted. Under the test conditions of Example 1 and at a bath temperature of 310° C., the conversion is 69.9 mole %, and the selectivities with respect to methacrylic acid and acetic acid are 82.5 mole % and 3.7 mole % respectively. Maleic acid and citraconic acid are formed in a total amount of 1.2%.
