Procedure
A stirring solution of 2-(N-benzyl-N-methylamino)ethyl-5-(furan-2-yl)-5,8-dihydro-1,3,7-trimethyl-2,4-dioxopyrido [2,3-d]pyrimidine-6-carboxylate (2.0 g, 0.004 M; Example XVI) in methanol (100 ml) was adjusted to pH≈1 via dropwise addition of concentrated HCl. Evaporation of solvent gave a brown oil, which was dissolved in methanol and treated with activated charcoal. Filtration of the solution to remove the charcoal and evaporation of solvent from the filtrate gave a yellow solid residue which was crystallized with acetone to give 1.42 g (75%) of the title compound as a pale yellow crystalline salt mp. 135°-138° C.
