Procedure

To a stirred solution of the product of step 2 (0.742 g, 3.51 mmol), triphenylphosphine (1.01 g, 3.85 mmol) and ethanol (0.25 mL, 4.29 mmol) in ethyl acetate (12 mL) was added, dropwise, diethyl diazodicarboxylate (0.61 mL, 3.87 mmol). After 4 hours the reaction solution was diluted with ethyl acetate and washed with aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution. The organic layer was dried (sodium sulfate) and concentrated. The resulting gum was purified by flash chromatography over silica (hexanes/ethyl acetate) to afford 0.744 g (89%) of product as a white solid: 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ7.40 (dd, J=8.4, 2.0 Hz, 1H), 7.37-7.31 (m, 2H), 7.17 (d, J=2.0 Hz, 1H), 7.13 (t, J=7.4 Hz, 1H), 7.03-6.92 (m, 3H), 4.13 (q, J=7.1 Hz, 2H), 1.37 (t, J=7.1 Hz, 3H) ppm.
