Procedure
A solution of oxalyl chloride in dichloromethane (2.0M, 116 mmol) was chilled to −70° C. (internal temperature) under a nitrogen atmosphere. DMSO (15 mL, 211.3 mmol) was added dropwise maintaining −65° C. and then stirring was continued for 45 min. at −70° C. A solution of the 3-nitro-2-chlorobenzyl alcohol (14.4 g, 76.6 mmol) in dichloromethane (250 mL) was then added and the reaction stirred at −70° C. for 2 h. Triethylamine (54 mL, 387 mmol) was added dropwise and the reaction stirred for 2 h at −70° C. and then 12 h at room temperature. The reaction was quenched by the addition of 500 mL of water. The aqueous phase was extracted twice with dichloromethane. The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried with MgSO4, filtered, and evaporated to obtain a light brown solid. Column Chromatography (silica gel, 30% dichloromethane/hexanes to 70% dichloromethane/hexanes) produced 11.1 g (78%) of the desired 3-nitro-2-chlorobenzaldehyde as a yellow solid.
