Procedure

Referring to Schemes 1 and 2, a solution of methyl 4-bromomethylbenzoate (0.5 mmol) in DMF (2.5 mL) was treated with 1,3-Dihydro-benzoimidazol-2-one (0.5 mmol) and solid K2CO3 (0.6 mmol). After stirring at 23° C. for 4 h, the reaction was poured into water (10 mL) and the resulting solid was isolated by filtration. The filter cake was rinsed with water and allowed to dry in vacuo to yield 4-(2-Oxo-2,3-dihydro-benzoimidazol-1-ylmethyl)-benzoic acid methyl ester.
