A solution of 4-(4-ethoxycarbonylphenoxy)piperidine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (3.5 g, 10 mmol) and 2-methylpyridine (1.9 g, 2.0 mmol) in 50 mL of THF was stirred at 0° C. as LiHMDS (1.0M, 22 mL) was added dropwise. The reaction was stirred at 45° C. overnight, then quenched with ice-water and the solvent evaporated. The residue was extracted with CH2Cl2 (3×30 mL), and the combined CH2Cl2 layers were washed with saturated NaHCO3, saturated NaCl solution, dried over Na2SO4, and concentrated to give the product; Mp 138-140° C.; MS m/z 397 (M+H).
