To a mixture of 6-chloro-3,3-dimethyl-2-(3-nitro-phenyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinolin-4-ol (14.3 g, 43 mmol) and triethylsilane (20 mL) at 25° C. was added trifluoroacetic acid (5 mL) dropwise. The resulting mixture was stirred at 25° C. for 1 h. Then the reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was extracted with ethyl acetate (2×200 mL), washed with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution (2×100 mL), dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo. Purification on flash silica gel chromatography (silica gel from QingDao, 200-300 mesh, glass column from Shanghai SD company)(10% ethyl acetate/hexanes) to afford 6-chloro-3,3-dimethyl-2-(3-nitro-phenyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinoline (10.5 g, 77%) as a white solid: LC/MS m/e calcd for C17H17ClN2O2 (M+H)+: 317.79, observed: 317.0.
