A mixture of 2-(4′-tert-butyl-5-fluoro-biphenyl-3-yl)-3,3-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinoline-6-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (0.17 g, 0.37 mmol) in ethanol (3 mL) and tetrahydrofuran (5 mL), 30% sodium hydroxide in water (1 mL) was stirred at 60° C. for 12 h. The mixture was neutralized with a 3 N aqueous hydrochloric acid solution and extracted with ethyl acetate (2×50 mL), washed with water, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and then concentrated in vacuo to afford 2-(4′-tert-butyl-5-fluoro-biphenyl-3-yl)-3,3-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinoline-6-carboxylic acid (0.13 g, 80%) as a white solid which was used for next step without further purification: LC/MS m/e calcd for C28H30FNO2 (M+H)+: 432.6, observed: 432.3;
