A solution of 3-(4-cyano-2,6-dimethyl-phenyl)-propionic acid tert-butyl ester (4.1 g, 15.8 mmol), hydroxylamine hydrochloride (1.65 g, 23.7 mmol) and triethylamine (3.20 g, 31.6 mmol) in methanol (40 mL) is refluxed for 2 h before the solvent is removed in vacuo. The residue is taken up in isopropyl acetate (50 mL) and washed twice with water (50 mL). The org. extract is dried over MgSO4, filtered, evaporated and dried to give 3-[4-(N-hydroxycarbamimidoyl)-2,6-dimethyl-phenyl]-propionic acid tert-butyl ester (4.4 g) as a white solid.
