Procedure
A 1 molar solution of borane-tetrahydrofuran complex (75.5 ml) was added to a solution of the product of step (a) (8.0 g) in tetrahydrofuran (160 ml) under an inert atmosphere. The solution was heated at reflux overnight, cooled to room temperature, and methanol (50 ml) cautiously added. When all effervescence had ceased, methanolic hydrogen chloride (50 ml) was added, and the mixture refluxed for an hour. The suspension was reduced to dryness giving a white solid which was crystallised from aqueous ethanol to give white needles, 6.88 g mp 258°-9°.
