Procedure

A mixture of 4,5-bis(4-fluorophenyl)-2-(1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethylsulfonyl)imidazole (3.0 g, 0.0071 mole), methyl iodide (1.5 g, 0.011 mole), potassium carbonate (1.5 g, 0.011 mole), and dimethylformamide (30 ml) was stirred for 50 hours at room temperature in a stoppered flask. The mixture was then poured into water, and after the oil crystallized, the solid was collected and washed with water. There was obtained 2.9 g of colorless crystals, mp 122°-124°. Recrystallization from heptane (125 ml) gave 2.5 g (81%) of colorless prisms, mp 125°-126.5°.
