Procedure

One proceeds as described in Example 18 with the difference that 2-acetonyl-4,5-dimethoxy-2'-chlorobenzopnenone is applied as starting substance. The resulting crude 1-(2-chlorophenyl)-4-methyl-7,8-dimethoxy-5H-2,3-benzodiazepine is treated with absolute ethanol containing hydrochloric acid to obtain the pure hydrochloride. [C18H18ClN2O2 ]Cl=365.5. The title compound decomposes at 186°-188° C. after recrystallization from absolute ethanol and ether.
