3-(4-Biphenylyl)-3-methoxyacrylonitrile plus 3-(4-biphenylyl)-3,3-dimethoxypropionitrile (2.9 grams as a mixture from example 6), hydroxylamine hydrochloride (4.7 grams), and sodium methoxide (11.9 grams) were mixed in 500 ml. of methanol and refluxed for 48 hours. After the methanol was evaporated, water was added and the product, separated by filtration, yielded 1.2 grams. NMR confirmed the identity of the product.
