Procedure
To a solution of 6-(4-formylnaphthalen-1-yloxy)nicotinonitrile (Preparation 1) (3.83 g, 14.0 mmol) in DMSO (90 mL) was added K2CO3 (0.97 g, 7.0 mmol). The mixture was cooled to 0° C., H2O2 (27.5% w/v, 4.6 mL, 37.0 mmol) added dropwise and the reaction allowed to warm to rt. The mixture was poured into water (300 mL) and the resulting precipitate was filtered, washed with water and air dried to give the title compound which was used without further purification: RT=3.13 min; m/z (ES+)=292.9 [M+H]+.
