Procedure
Dimethylamine hydrochloride (1.2 g; 12.5 mmol) and, 1 hr later, 4-bromobutylphtalimide (3.5 g; 12.4 mmol) are added to a suspension of K2CO3 (4.3 g; 31 mmol), in acetone (5 mL) at 25° C.; the suspension is then refluxed overnight. After cooling at r.t., the mixture is filtered and evaporated to dryness; silica gel flash chromatography of the residue oil (eluent CHCl3/CH3OH 8:2) yields N-(4-dimethylamino-butyl)-phtalimide as a white solid (2.2 g; 8.94 mmol).
