Procedure

A mixture of Boc-protected triazole from example 3 (7.7 g, 21.221 mmol) and paraformaldehyde (3.23 g, 5 eq.) in 50 mL of o-xylene was heated at 125° C. for 3 h. After cooling, the mixture was filtered over a Celite-fritted funnel and washed with 10 mL of o-xylene. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to provide the desired intermediate as a foam (8.45 g, 100%+)
