Procedure

A solution of tert-butyl 4-(methylsulphonyl)piperazine-1-carboxylate (7 g) in methylene chloride (150 ml) containing TFA (35 ml) was stirred for 2 hours at ambient temperature. The volatiles were removed under vacuum and the resultant residue was partitioned between methylene chloride and 2N aqueous sodium hydroxide. The organic phase was separated and washed with brine, dried over magnesium sulphate and evaporated to give 1-(methylsulphonyl)piperazine (2.18 g).
