A mixture of 1-acetylpiperazine (1.0 g, 7.8 mmol), 1-bromo-3-chloropropane (772 μl, 7.8 mmol) and potassium carbonate (2.7 g, 19.5 mmol) in acetonitrile (150 ml) was heated at reflux for 2 hours. The mixture was cooled, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography eluting with methylene chloride/methanol (98/2) to give 1-acetyl-4-(3-chloropropoxy)piperazine (656 mg, 41%) as a colourless oil.
