Trifluoroacetic acid (20 ml) was added to a mixture of 4-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-1-(2-fluoroethyl)piperazine (3.7 g), triethylsilane (8 ml) and methylene chloride (100 ml) and the resultant mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 1.5 hours. The mixture was evaporated and the residue was triturated under diethyl ether. The solid so obtained was isolated, washed with diethyl ether and dried to give 1-(2-fluoroethyl)piperazine trifluoroacetic acid salt (6.0 g) as a solid.
