2.0 g. of 3-methoxy-1,3,5(10),8-estratetraen-17β-ol is electrolyzed in 200 ml. of liquid ammonia and 20 ml. of ethanol in the presence of 2 g. of lithium ethylate and 0.5 g. of lithium anilide for 3 hours in an undivided cell between an aluminum cathode and a platinum anode, with a current density of 2.5 A/cm2. After the reaction mixture has been worked up, 1.8 g. of 3-methoxy-2,5(10)-estradien-17β-ol is isolated, m.p. 110° C.
