Procedure

A solution of 1.77 g N-chlorosuccinimide in 50 ml DMF (dimethylformamide) was added dropwise to a mixture of 3.0 g indolo[1,2-d][1,4]benzodiazepin-6(7H)-one in 50 ml dimethylformamide at room temperature. The resulting solution was stirred overnight at room temperature and then poured into 800 ml water. The precipitate was collected, washed with water and dried (P2O5) under vacuum to give 3.1 g solid, m.p. 287°-289° C.
