Procedure

A rapidly stirred suspension of 1.98 g (5.08 mmol) of ethyl 1-(2-bromoethyl)-6,7,8-trifluoro-1,4-dihydro-5-methyl-4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylate, 3.50 g (25.3 mmol) of ground potassium carbonate, and 40 ml of DMF was heated at 80° C. under argon for four hours. The suspension was concentrated and the residue was partitioned between methylene chloride and water. The organic layer was dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated to give 1.52 g of the title compound as a DMF complex, mp 150°-152° C.
