A solution of 6.4 g (12.3 mmol) of N-(2,4-dimethoxy-benzyl),N-(5-benzyloxy-2-ethoxycarbonyl-benzyl)glycine ethyl ester in 140 mL of anhydrous THF was cooled in an ice bath. 24.6 mL of 1 N potassium tert-butoxide in THF was added slowly to the stirring cold solution. The reaction mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 1 hour and then allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred for 4 hours. The mixture was poured into a biphasic mixture of ethyl acetate and saturated aqueous ammonium chloride. The organic fraction was washed twice with brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure to give 5.7 g of the title compound; MS (ESI+): 476.3 e/z (M+1)
