Procedure
2.4 ml of aqueous 2.5 N sodium hydroxide solution was added to a solution of 0.44 g of ethyl 5-fluoropyridine-2-carboxylate in 5 ml of tetrahydrofuran and 2 ml of methanol, and stirred at room temperature for 15 minutes. This was neutralized with aqueous 10% citric acid solution, extracted with ethyl acetate, and the organic layer was washed with saturated saline water. After dried, the solvent was evaporated away under reduced pressure to obtain 0.41 g of the entitled compound as a white crystal.
