To a solution of 2-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-8-(methoxymethylene)-2-aza-spiro[4.5]decan-1-one (793 mg, 2.42 mmol,) in THF (10 mL) was added 2N HCl (12.1 mL, 24.2 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight and then quenched with sat NaHCO3 (aq), and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layers were combined washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated in vacuo to give the desired product as a white solid (750 mg, 98%) which did not require any further purification. MS (m/e): 314.2 (MH+).
