To a stirred solution of 2-bromonicotinic acid (1.01 g, 5 mmol) dissolved in anhydrous dichloromethane (8 mL) were added EDCI (1.34 g, 7 mmol) and 3-tert-butylaniline (0.74 g, 5 mmol) at room temperature and the reaction mixture was stirred for 12 hours. The mixture was then diluted with dichloromethane, followed by saturated sodium bicarbonate and water wash. The dichloromethane layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by flash chromatography to obtain 2-bromo-N-(3-tert-butylphenyl)nicotinamide in 59% yield (950 mg). Rt: 2.44 min (20-100-5 method). MS: (ES) m/z 333, 335 (M+H+).
