A mixture of 4-cyano-N-(2,5-dimethylphenyl)piperidinecarboxamide (i.e. the product of Example 14, Step A) (12.75 g, 49.6 mmol), sodium hydrosulfide hydrate (11.1 g, 150 mmol) and diethylamine hydrochloride (10.9 g, 100 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (50 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 3 days. The resulting thick, green suspension was added dropwise into ice water (600 mL). The resulting solid was filtered, washed with water and air-dried to give 12.5 g of the title compound as a tan solid decomposing at 155-156° C.
