Procedure
A mixture of rac-6-chloro-3-(3-methoxy-phenyl)-1,3-dihydro-indol-2-one (0.16 g, 0.6 mmol) (from Example 6b supra), 4-chlorobenzyl bromide (0.15 g, 0.7 mmol) (Lancaster), potassium iodide (0.12 g, 0.71 mmol) and potassium carbonate (0.18 g, 1.3 mmol) in acetone (5 mL) was heated at 60° C. for 6 hours in a capped pressure tube. After cooling, mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate (50 mL) and extracted with water (2×50 mL) and brine (50 mL). Aqueous layers were back washed with ethyl acetate (50 mL). Organic layers were combined, dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated. Residue was recrystallized from dichloromethane-hexanes to give rac-6-chloro-3-(4-chloro-benzyl)-3-(3-methoxy-phenyl)-1,3-dihydro-indol-2-one as white crystals. (Yield 0.18 g, 75.3%).
