A solution of the above oil, 3-benzyl-8-trifluoromethyl-4-(3-trimethylsilanylethynylphenyl)-quinoline (730 mg, 1.6 mmol) and potassium carbonate (220 mg, 1.6 mmol) in methanol (30 mL) is stirred at ambient temperature for 3 h. The reaction mixture is stripped to dryness and the residue taken up in ethyl acetate and washed with 30 mL (1N HCl). The organic layer is dried and concentrated in vacuo to provide after chromatography 870 mg (80%) of the title compound: MS (ESI) m/z 388.
