13.5 g of 6-benzyloxy-4-methoxymethyl-β-carboline-3-carbaldehyde is dissolved in 150 ml of dry dimethyl formamide (DMF) and there are added thereto 6 g of hydroxylamine hydrochloride and a solution of 6 g of potassium hydroxide in 30 ml of ethanol. The reaction mixture is stirred for one hour at room temperature, filtered, and the residue washed with 2×20 ml of DMF. The DMF fraction is combined with 200 ml of ice water, the precipitate is filtered off, washed with water, and dried. Yield: 9.6 g.
