Procedure

In a 25 ml round flask, 2.0 g (11.1 mmol) of isophtalic acid monomethyl ester and 2.6 g (11.1 mmol) 2-bromo-1-(4-chloro-phenyl)-ethanone are dissolved in 10 ml of DMF followed by addition of 3.1 g (22.2 mmol, 2.0 eq.) of K2CO3. After stirring the suspension 2 h at room temperature, the solvent is removed in vacuo and the residue taken up in CH2Cl2. The organic phase is washed with aqueous NaHCO3 (5%) and the phases separated. The organic layer is dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated to yield the title compound which is used for the next step without further purification. Mass spectrum: m/z (M+H+NH3)+: 198.0
