Finely crushed lithium hydroxide (1.03 g, 43 mmol) was added to a solution of mercaptoacetic acid (1.5 mL, 1.97 g, 21.5 mmol) in 2-propanol (20 mL). The mixture was stirred for 1.5 hours at room temperature. All solvent was removed by rotary evaporation. This gave a fine white powder (2.55 g, 97%). The mass recovery and NMR suggest that the salt forms as a monohydrate.
