Procedure
Eight hundred microliters of chlorosulfonyl isocyanate was added to a solution of 1.28 g (10 mM) pent-1-enyl acetate in 5 ml methylene chloride at 0° under nitrogen. After stirring at 0° 5 days, the reaction mixture was added dropwise to a mixture of 5 g ice, 1.15 ml water, 2.82 g NaHCO3 and 1.0 g Na2SO3 and stirred at 0° for 30 minutes. The mixture was extracted with 2×25 ml methylene choride and the combined organic phases washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was chromatographed on silica gel in hexane/ethyl acetate to yield 60 mg trans 4-acetoxy-3-n-propylazetidin-2-one (3.4%).
